"The Long-Term Impact of School Quality on Educational Attainment and Labor Market Outcomes"

Abstract : This paper studies the effects of attending a more advanced track in middle school, from grades 5 to 9 or 10, on long-run labor market and educational outcomes. Tracks differ widely with respect to peer quality, teacher quality, and teaching curriculum. Our identification strategy exploits random variation in track attendance caused by school entry age cut-off rules. Despite the stark differences between tracks, we find that attending a more advanced track in middle school has no positive effects on wages, occupational choice, unemployment, and highest degree obtained.
This suggests that the exposure to higher quality peers and teachers and to a more academic curriculum in middle school has no positive long-run effects.
